Emergencies can be unpredictable, so having a plan in place is important. A well thought out plan helps you and your whānau know exactly what to do, where to go, and how to stay safe when emergencies happen.

Create your household emergency plan

Talk with your family about how you’ll stay in touch during an emergency, where you’ll go if you need to evacuate, and how you’ll get there.

Make sure everyone knows the emergency meeting points and the evacuation routes from your home, work, or school.

Include everyone in your plan

Consider the needs of everyone in your household, including children, elderly relatives, pets, or anyone with medical or special needs.

Your plan should be clear, and everyone should know what their role is during an emergency.

Practise your plan

It’s not enough to just have a plan - you need to practise it.

Run through your evacuation routes and make sure everyone in your household knows what to do. Regular practise will help you stay calm and focused when a real emergency occurs.
