Me mōhio ki ō kiritata Know your neighbours
In an emergency, your neighbours are often your first line of support. Communities with strong social networks recover better from disasters. Help make your community strong by building connections with the people around you.
Get to know your neighbours
Introduce yourself to your neighbours and exchange contact information. Find out who might need extra help during an emergency, such as the elderly or those with young children, and make a plan to check in on each other.
Talk about what resources you have that can be shared during an emergency. You might be able to share items like BBQ’s or portable cookers with other families.
Form a neighbourhood network
Work together to develop a neighbourhood emergency plan. Share resources, skills, and knowledge, so everyone is prepared and able to support each other in a crisis. Find out more about Community Response Plans in your local area.
